Omaha Personal Trainers Discuss Keeping Children Active

With summer slowly disappearing and the days getting darker faster keeping motivated can be a challenge, especially with children. As adults, we understand that habits develop early in life, one of the best habits to form is activity development. This can range from sports like soccer, basketball or baseball. If your child is not into sports have them try a hobby instead for example, have them try bike riding and hiking. The goal is to help your child find something active that makes them feel successful. Making outside activities a habit early on in your child’s life can help keep from in front of the TV.

For parents it can be challenging keeping the kids from being in front of the TV, computer or video games all the time. Sometimes it is best to use physical activity as a reward. “Johnny, if you clean your room we can go to the park today!” Several television stations, like Nickelodeon took charge with child obesity by making their stations go off air to encourage children to go outside and play.

Benefits for Children to Get Moving!

Encouraging children to go out and play can decrease risk of chronic diseases, improve physical activity and give a child an all-around feeling of well-being. Regular activity can help children maintain healthy weight. Let’s face it if children starting being active at a young age they will develop a lifelong commitment to being active.

Recommended Exercise Guidelines

It is recommended that children get 30 to 60 minutes of athletic activity every day. The activities do not need to be performed all at once. It is common for children to have short burst of energy, this would be an ideal time to have them use that energy outside playing. The older the children get the more intense the activities can be. The duration of an activity will increase as the child ages for example, preteens and teenagers could easily perform 60 minutes of activity at once. At minimum any athletic activity should last a minimum of 20 minutes for at least 3 or 4 days a week.

Reminder: Keep your child drinking enough fluids before, during and after physical activity. 

Physical Activity should be fun for all ages. Parents can promote outside activity by joining their children or making the activity competitive like having a contest of who has the most activity of the week. Much like I explained in my earlier post those who exercise together, stay together! Encourage your family to stay active.
